- Our Quick and Wonderful Adventure at Turkey Run State Park
- Our Creative, Funny, Hoosier Road-Trip Summer
While most Hoosiers moseyed on down to Florida for the week, we Tucker’s stayed in-state and had ourselves an adventure at Turkey Run State Park. It’s one our favorite places to go for a few days–just a couple hours away from home, far enough away to feel like a getaway. With a wonderful old-timey Inn, indoor swimming pool, and miles of trails to wander, this place has the winning combo for the Tucker’s. Ya feel me?
Did I mention I sprained my ankle? And I fractured my toes? No? Well I did. The short story is that I was multitasking down the stairs. I thought the landing was next but it was three stairs down. Et voila! My foot looked like Shrek’s girlfriend Fiona’s foot for a couple of weeks.
I stayed in the old-timey Inn and painted and sketched for hours while the rest of my people went to the woods. I didn’t work on anything important, just doodled and tried new color combinations for hours. I like to do this when I don’t have looming deadlines and awaiting clients. It’s truly amazing to me what I learn when I just sit and paint without a road map.
See all those old-timey people in the photo behind me? Those are the folks who started up the park. Adorning them are DRESSES and SUITS and FANCY HATS! I get claustrophic just thinking about all those layers of clothing, etc. Unfortunately the photo doesn’t explain why they decided to call the park Turkey Run. Was this once the site of a turkey racetrack? Perhaps the turkeys were notoriously fast in these parts? Or was this one of those founding people’s names? As in, “Good old Turkey Run, he was a good man. He donated all his land to the state when he passed.”
Perfect place for Bode to scratch out his smiley-face-with-tongue signature.
Here they sit inside a petrified bubble.
Here they are doing their best Brady Bunch impression. (Friends under 40, YouTube a Brady Bunch rerun and you will instantly get the joke. The song also will be stuck in your head until next week.)
Meandering through an ancient and mossy canyon isn’t a bad way to spend the day. If only we could solve the Turkey Run naming puzzle.
Pretty turkey waterfall.
